Agencies
The agencies (agent) control their models' destinies. Once an agent has signed up a new recruit, they will cultivate and build the model, carefully plotting every step of their careers. And if the model is lucky enough to reach the top, the agent must strive to keep them there.
Inside the Agency
A model agency is the epicentre of the modeling business. Agencies act as a base for most of their models, and a regular stream of gorgeous people can be found decorating the offices. Agencies are swamped with nervous candidates, anxiously waiting to be seen, and to find out if they have the looks required to make a model. The bookers (the agency staff who handle the models) usually sit around a large circular table "a booking table", which encompasses a rotating filing system containing "charts" - their models' schedules. From these tables, models will be booked for assignments al over the US.
The Mother Agency
When a model first signs up with a model agency, this particular agency becomes known as the model's "mother" agency. Some models do make a habit of switching agencies; however, most stay loyal to their mother agency.
A Model Agent's Role
The structure of an agency is divided into tiers: the new faces division, main model management and a top tier for the more experienced models - the superstars. each division is run by different bookers, often on separate tables. The general role of a model agent is to represent its models by managing and promoting them. But the duties extend much further than this.
The booker's role depends on the models they are representing. If they are handling new faces models, the job will involve everything from nurturing the model and hyping her within the industry, to sending her on "go-sees" (industry jargon for appointments) with photographers and magazines. It is also down to the booker to mold the new recruits into perfectly groomed, polished models. They will arrange "tests" and help build the model's book. Occasionally, if necessary, bookers will chaperone young models locally as well as abroad.
Bookers who run the main division will often spend their day negotiating fees, booking assignments, sending models on castings, and organizing the models' domestic and foreign trips. They arrange everything from hotels to facials, manicures and personal trainers.
There are bookers who exclusively manage the premier tier - the supermodels. They will handle all the Supermodels' special projects, such as videos or books, as well as their press interviews and television appearances. Supermodels are always in demand and invariably receive many more requests than they could ever possibly accept, with both the first and second "options" always taken. Therefore, their bookers are in the unique position of being able to select who the model will and will not work for and spend most of their day turning work away. It is crucial that a supermodel only works for the high-fashion magazines, for whom one wrong move could damage their reputation and cost them future bookings.
Publicist
Some superstar models, such as Cindy Crawford and Niki Taylor, have their own publicist in addition to their model agencies. These publicist do not handle bookings, but are hired to help regulate the model's media exposure. It is the publicist that decides which television appearances and press interviews the model will accept.
Scouting
To fulfil the constant need for fresh faces, agencies must continually look for new models. Model agencies are inundated with letters and calls from aspiring models and spend considerable time assessing them. They also employ scouts to go out in search of new talent, although many models are discovered by chance. The scout's hunting ground can be anywhere from schools to shopping malls, in all corners of the world. Once found, the new discovery is taken under the agent's wing. Each one is a gamble, but every once in a while they will have discovered the next Kate Moss.
